How to Wash a Herschel Backpack

Start by checking your Herschel backpack’s care label. Its fabric, lining, and trim determine how much cleaning it can tolerate. A quick wipe may be all it needs.

Herschel Australia’s cleaning guide describes both light cleaning and a deeper wash, while emphasizing the manufacturer’s instructions for the particular bag. Don’t treat the deeper method as permission to soak every Herschel model.

For Everyday Dirt

Empty the main compartment and every pocket, then shake out debris. Use a soft cloth or sponge to wipe the interior. For suitable exterior fabric, the guide suggests gentle cleaning with a little soap, followed by removing the soap with clean, cool water.

Patch-test a cleaning product first and use a light hand. Vigorous brushing can damage mesh or surface treatments. Treat leather details according to their own care instructions rather than scrubbing them with the fabric.

Before a Deeper Wash

Confirm that the method is appropriate for your model. Herschel’s Australian guide describes using shallow cool or lukewarm water and rinsing afterward; it does not prescribe an overnight stain-remover soak.

If the label restricts your bag to spot cleaning, follow that restriction. Ask Herschel for advice about stains that won’t shift rather than adding stronger chemicals.

Drying

The guide advises against machine washing or tumble drying and recommends drying out of direct sunlight. Open the compartments so moisture can escape, and let the lining and padding dry before repacking.

Don’t hang a heavy wet bag from a weak decorative loop. Support it without putting unnecessary strain on one attachment point.

Materials Still Matter

Recycled polyester, cotton canvas, and leather details don’t become interchangeable because they share a brand name. Check the material description and care label together, especially if you’re following instructions originally written for a different Herschel bag.

A remaining cosmetic mark doesn’t necessarily justify more aggressive washing. If the real problem is a catching closure, see our zipper repair guide instead.
